The month is all about blood donations and encourages people to contribute to this life - saving cause . It ' s been an ongoing campaign since January 1970 , reminding everyone to donate and honoring those who already have . At Fort McCoy , they regularly hold blood drives every other month in building 50 . According to the American Red Cross , someone in America needs a blood transfusion every two seconds , and each donation can help save multiple lives . After donating , the blood is processed and separated into different components , like red blood cells , platelets , and plasma . This allows one donation to be used for various medical treatments and emergencies . The donated blood is tested , stored , and distributed as needed . Anyone can be a blood donor any time of year by searching online for blood drives at redcrossblood . org . You can also make appointments , donate , and find out more about saving lives through blood donation . The Armed Forces Blood Program ( ASBP ) emphasizes that donating blood not only saves lives but also serves many other purposes . The need for blood is constant , from emergency surgeries to treatments at military facilities . The ASBP coordinates additional blood donation events when needed , including large - scale drives to raise awareness about the importance of donating blood . They aim to always have a fully stocked supply of quality blood products . According to the ASBP , type O blood is considered universal for blood donations , while type AB is considered universal for platelet donations . These donations can be used for any recipient in certain situations or when other blood types are low . To learn more about the Armed Services Blood Program , visit militarydonor . com .
