Department of Labor found that Apex Roofing & Restoration LLC had illegally hired the teenager , which violated federal child labor laws . The young worker fell about 50 feet from a roof and sustained severe injuries , ultimately resulting in his death . The department ' s investigation revealed that Apex Roofing had knowingly employed the teen for a hazardous job , which is strictly prohibited . As a result , they were hit with the hefty penalty . The Wage and Hour Division , responsible for enforcing labor laws , will continue to crack down on illegal child labor practices and hold violators accountable . In the fiscal year 2023 , they discovered over 950 child labor violations , resulting in penalties totaling over $8 million . Workers and employers can reach out to the division for assistance and information in multiple languages .
