A roofing contractor in Alabama got slapped with a hefty fine of $117 , 175 after a tragic incident involving a 15 - year - old worker . The U . S . Department of Labor found that Apex Roofing & Restoration LLC had illegally hired the teenager , which violated federal child labor laws . The young worker fell about 50 feet from a roof and sustained severe injuries , ultimately resulting in his death . The department ' s investigation revealed that Apex Roofing had knowingly employed the teen for a hazardous job , which is strictly prohibited . As a result , they were hit with the hefty penalty . The Wage and Hour Division , responsible for enforcing labor laws , will continue to crack down on illegal child labor practices and hold violators accountable . In the fiscal year 2023 , they discovered over 950 child labor violations , resulting in penalties totaling over $8 million . Workers and employers can reach out to the division for assistance and information in multiple languages . The department also offers a free Timesheet App in English and Spanish to help ensure accurate hours worked and pay .
