Hey everyone! I ' m really excited to be here at the first US Caribbean Meeting on Extreme Heat . I want to give a shoutout to Dr . Pablo Mendez - Lazaro , Dr . Zheng O ' Neill , and Dr . Jorge González for their work on this summit . It ' s great to see representatives from NOAA and the University of Puerto Rico here too . As President Biden’s Puerto Rico Economic Growth Coordinator , I ' ve seen the progress being made in Puerto Rico ' s recovery . CCAN is doing important work in addressing climate risks in the Caribbean , including extreme heat . The topic of heat is a big issue in the Caribbean , with temperatures rising due to climate change . This summit is a great opportunity to share ideas , build partnerships , and come up with solutions to tackle heat risks in the region . Let ' s work together to support ongoing efforts and make a difference in the US Caribbean . At the Department of Commerce , the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is working hard to study the effects of extreme heat on our climate . This includes their Climate Adaptation Partnerships/Regional Integrated Sciences and Assessments Program , which aims to promote fair adaptation through research and community involvement . The program supports 13 regional teams across the country , made up of researchers , specialists , and community partners , who work on various climate adaptation projects , including those related to extreme heat . These projects focus on areas such as heat mitigation , urban heat islands , and heat - related health risks . One current project funded through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law is looking at how extreme heat and wildfire smoke interact . We are committed to addressing the climate crisis and working with local governments and communities to manage heat risks , especially in the U . S . Caribbean region . We are dedicated to securing funding for heat risk mitigation in Puerto Rico and the U . S . Virgin Islands and collaborating with local partners to achieve our goals .
