The US and Australia had their annual Strategic Policy Dialogue ( SPD ) in Honolulu on February 27 . The SPD , which started in 2019 , is a platform for both countries to discuss cooperation on deterrence , arms control , and maintaining stability in the Indo - Pacific region . Mallory Stewart , Assistant Secretary of the Bureau of Arms Control , Deterrence , and Stability , Department of State , and Dr . Vipin Narang , Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Space Policy , Office of the Undersecretary of Defense for Policy , Department of Defense , co - chaired the US delegation . Sarah deZoeten , First Assistant Secretary Defence and National Security Policy , Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade , and Sheridan Kearnan , First Assistant Secretary Strategic Policy , Department of Defence , co - chaired the Australian side . Both countries restated their commitment to enhancing security in the Indo - Pacific and working together on diplomatic and defense efforts for a peaceful and prosperous region . They also discussed arms control , risk reduction , and the importance of transparent and engaged dialogue to prevent unintended conflicts . They highlighted the significance of multilateral diplomacy and regional institutions like the ASEAN Regional Forum and the Pacific Islands Forum . The SPD , now in its fifth year , continues to serve as a crucial platform for strengthening US - Australian collaboration on security priorities in the Indo - Pacific , including extended deterrence .
