☷Merriam Woods Man Sentenced for Illegal Firearms After Shooting at Police During High Speed Chase

A guy from Merriam Woods in Missouri got sentenced in federal court for having guns illegally . Blake Christopher Basten , who is 34 , got sentenced to 10 years in federal prison without parole . He admitted to having a gun as a felon in two different cases . In the first case , the police found a loaded pistol on him when they searched a house . He said he got the gun by trading drugs for it , because he had been shot at before . In the second case , he was in a car that rammed into a police officer ' s vehicle and then got into a high - speed chase . The chase ended when the car crashed into another car . Two guns were found in the car , and witnesses said they saw Basten shooting during the chase . He was arrested soon after hiding under a car . It ' s against federal law for felons to have guns . When Basten was arrested , he was already on parole for involuntary manslaughter . He had threatened his ex - girlfriend with a gun , then got into a high - speed chase that resulted in the death of an innocent bystander . He has a history of felony convictions and fled from police in a stolen car . This case was handled by Assistant U . S . Attorney Stephanie L . Wan and investigated by several law enforcement agencies . It ' s part of Project Safe Neighborhoods , a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in our communities . The Department recently launched a new strategy for PSN focusing on building trust , supporting prevention efforts , enforcing priorities , and tracking results .
