The event focused on workers ' rights and accessibility for underserved workers . The discussion took place at ROC United ' s headquarters in New York City and shed light on how extreme indoor heat affects the health , safety , and livelihood of restaurant workers . OSHA officials talked about their commitment to addressing heat hazards and shared prevention methods . They also emphasized the importance of empowering workers to voice their safety concerns without fear of retaliation . Many restaurant kitchens , especially in commercial settings , often reach temperatures above 100 degrees Fahrenheit , exposing workers to extreme heat and humidity . During the session , a line cook named Jace Eliscu shared their experience of working in high temperatures and witnessing coworkers suffer from heat - related illnesses . Jace expressed hope that OSHA would take action to protect workers by implementing an enforcement initiative on heat - related hazards . OSHA Deputy Assistant Secretary Jim Frederick and New York Regional Administrator Richard Mendelson were both present at the event . Frederick highlighted the importance of addressing heat hazards in both indoor and outdoor environments throughout the year and ensuring that employers have the necessary tools to protect their workers .
