☷Popeyes franchisee pays $212K after US Department of Labor investigation finds child labor overtime violations

Popeyes franchisee in trouble for child labor and overtime violations , had kids as young as 13 working at their San Francisco Bay Area locations . The franchisee , known as 14th St . Chicken Corp . , operating as Popeyes Chicken & Biscuits on International Blvd . in Oakland , CA , got busted by the US Department of Labor . They found that the franchisee hired underage kids and made them work longer hours than allowed by child labor laws . On top of that , they also cheated their workers out of overtime pay . This isn ' t the first time this franchisee has been caught breaking the rules either . In the past , they were cited for similar violations at their Oakland and Tracy restaurants in 2003 and 2022 . As a result , they had to pay back wages and damages totaling $39 , 826 for 15 employees , as well as $121 , 104 in civil money penalties for child labor violations and $12 , 104 for overtime violations . The US Department of Labor is cracking down on child labor violations across all industries , including fast food . They want to protect young workers and make sure they have a positive work experience without sacrificing their education . In fact , in fiscal year 2023 alone , the Wage and Hour Division found child labor violations in over 950 investigations , resulting in over $8 million in penalties for employers .
