☷NSA Awards Authors of Study of Automated Attacks on New Webservers

The NSA Research Directorate recently chose "Uninvited Guests: Analyzing the Identity and Behavior of Certificate Transparency Bots" as the winner of its 11th Annual Best Scientific Cybersecurity Paper Competition . The paper , written by researchers from Stony Brook University , looked into automated attacks on new webservers and how web browsers can trust an organization ' s cryptographic credentials . The researchers wanted to know what happens when a new encrypted website is set up . Gil Herrera , the NSA ' s Director of Research , said the paper was chosen because of its high - level , impactful science . The competition was established in 2013 to encourage scientific research in cybersecurity . The winning paper was selected from 30 nominated studies . The researchers found 105 malicious security bots attempting to perform harmful actions and also discovered security systems looking for new phishing attacks . This data can help system administrators and developers protect their systems . The researchers collected the data using the Certificate Transparency Honeypot ( CTPOT ) system . Adam Tagert , Technical Director of the NSA ' s Science of Security Initiative , praised the paper for its clear documentation , which allows others to verify and build upon the research .
