Grant funding allows for coaching , training , and savings accounts to help vulnerable communities achieve economic independence . Today , the U . S . Department of Housing and Urban Development ( HUD ) announced over $128 million in grants for the 2023 Renewal and New Family Self Sufficiency ( FSS ) Program . This program connects HUD - assisted families with resources such as financial literacy , job training , and educational opportunities to help them find employment and build assets . The FSS program is voluntary and offers coaching , referrals to services , and the establishment of a family savings account . HUD is committed to working with local partners to empower residents and promote economic justice . The FSS program is the largest asset - building program for low - income families and will fund over 1 , 450 coordinators next year . It aims to address the unequal access to savings and financial services that contribute to the racial wealth gap .
