The U . S . Department of Housing and Urban Development ( HUD ) announced today that it has published a new policy for addressing radon in the environmental review process . This policy shows HUD ' s increased commitment to raising awareness about radon and the importance of addressing the risk it poses to residential areas . HUD now requires that radon be taken into consideration during the environmental review process . Radon is a major cause of lung cancer , responsible for about 21 , 000 deaths annually . By including radon in the review process , HUD aims to tackle this serious health risk . Secretary Marcia L . Fudge stated that this policy will help protect families and children from radon exposure . The policy encourages testing for radon , but it is not mandatory . This is just the first step in raising awareness and addressing radon in HUD - assisted housing across the country . The policy applies to all HUD programs subject to environmental review regulations . In addition to the new policy , HUD has awarded over $3 million in grants to public housing agencies in six states to test and mitigate radon in their units . This investment will protect around 3 , 000 residents , including children , from the dangers of radon exposure . In addition , HUD is teaming up with the CDC for Radon Awareness Week . They will be hosting a webinar on January 22 , 2024 at 2:00 PM EST to discuss national and local efforts to reduce radon risks in U . S . communities .
