Today , the U . S . Department of Housing and Urban Development ( HUD ) released a report on the housing needs of trafficking survivors experiencing homelessness or housing instability . The report , titled “Housing Needs of Survivors of Human Trafficking Study , ” was the result of 18 months of collaboration and stakeholder engagement . It provides insights from survivors and service providers to inform efforts to better provide housing resources to this vulnerable population . HUD Secretary Marcia L . Fudge emphasized the importance of tailored approaches to affordable housing , and HUD’s Director on Gender - based Violence Prevention and Equity , Karlo Ng , highlighted the administration’s commitment to centering the housing needs of trafficking survivors . The report was submitted in response to a requirement in the 2022 reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act and aims to improve outreach , engagement , and access to housing and services for survivors . Under the Biden - Harris Administration , HUD is focused on reducing barriers to housing access , expanding rental assistance , and combating discrimination to better serve trafficking survivors . So basically , HUD is working on making it easier for people with criminal records to find housing , improving creditworthiness for home loans , and issuing a ton of new vouchers . They ' re also cracking down on discriminatory housing practices and making sure the Fair Housing Act is being followed . The report found that housing providers need to build trust with survivors and connect them with services , but there ' s not enough resources to meet the demand . Survivors also face barriers like documentation requirements , discrimination , and complex housing assistance programs . The most effective programs are trauma - informed and flexible to meet survivors ' individual needs . Check out HUD ' s VAWA site for more info .
