A new study released by the U . S . Department of Energy shows that connecting offshore wind energy projects along the Atlantic Coast through a transmission network could lower costs and increase reliability of the grid . The study also outlines immediate steps and long - term efforts to support the growth of offshore wind energy in the region . This will help reach the Biden - Harris Administration ' s goal of achieving 30 gigawatts of offshore wind energy by 2030 and potentially unlocking even more capacity by 2050 . U . S . Secretary of Energy Jennifer M . Granholm emphasized the benefits of offshore wind energy in powering homes , reducing fossil fuel dependence , and creating jobs . The report shows that connecting offshore wind energy to the East Coast ' s power system can help add transmission capacity and improve reliability while reducing costs for consumers . By creating transmission networks for offshore wind platforms , we can decrease reliance on fossil fuels and increase the efficiency of delivering clean energy to communities . The study recommends building offshore transmission in phases and implementing high - voltage direct current technology to support future network expansion . The Action Plan , funded in part by the Inflation Reduction Act , outlines a sustainable path forward for offshore wind transmission based on input from experts and stakeholders . Increased coordination and the use of HVDC interlinks can help efficiently bring renewable offshore wind energy onshore . The Atlantic Offshore Wind Transmission Action Plan was headed up by the DOE ' s Grid Deployment Office , working together with the Wind Energy Technologies Office and the Department of Interior ' s Bureau of Ocean Management .
