Hey , so the U . S . Department of Housing and Urban Development ( HUD ) just announced that they ' re charging PadSplit , Inc . , a property management company , along with Kevin Lee Forrestal and Lydia Forrestal , the property owners in Decatur , Georgia . Apparently , they ' re being charged with discrimination against a tenant because of her disability . HUD is saying that they didn ' t give her a reasonable accommodation when she asked for a service animal to help with her disability . HUD ' s all about protecting tenants and making sure everyone has equal access to housing . They ' re not gonna stand for discrimination! The Fair Housing Act makes it clear that it ' s illegal to discriminate based on disability , like refusing to rent to someone with a disability or not giving them the accommodations they need . In this case , the management company and the owners stopped a hearing - impaired resident from having a service animal and even refused to install a visual doorbell and smoke detector . Totally unfair , right? It ' s all about making sure people can feel safe and comfortable in their homes . HUD is taking this charge seriously and they ' re gonna make sure tenants aren ' t subjected to this kind of discrimination . If they find that discrimination did happen , they can award damages and even order the offenders to pay attorney fees . So , if you think you ' re a victim of housing discrimination , reach out to HUD and let them know . Housing providers and others can find out more about their duty to provide reasonable accommodations and modifications for people with disabilities here .
