☷Army engineers finish fourth Army family housing tower in Daegu South Korea

Col . Heather Levy , commander of the U . S . Army Corps of Engineers – Far East District , joined representatives from the 19th Expeditionary Sustainment Command , 8th Army , U . S . Army Garrison – Daegu , and the first family to live in a new housing tower to cut the ribbon on the facility at Camp Walker , South Korea , on Feb . 29 , 2024 . The housing tower , managed by USACE FED , provides 90 units for service members and their families stationed in the area . The tower is the fourth and final one on the installation , providing spaces for 360 service members and their families to live in the heart of Daegu . During the ceremony , the first family and representatives from the 19th Expeditionary Sustainment Command and U . S . Army Garrison – Daegu cut a cake to celebrate the facility opening . Over the past decade , approximately $250 million has been invested in family housing across four towers on the installation to improve the quality of life for Soldiers stationed in Daegu . The new family housing tower on Camp Walker in South Korea provides a home away from home for service members . Representatives from the 19th Expeditionary Sustainment Command , 8th Army , U . S . Army Corps of Engineers – Far East District , U . S . Army Garrison – Daegu , and the first family to live in the tower participated in the ribbon - cutting ceremony on Feb . 29 , 2024 . Brig . Gen . Frederick L . Crist , commanding general of the 19th ESC , highlighted the Army ' s commitment to improving the quality of life for Soldiers and their families . Col . Roderick F . Laughman , 8th Army Deputy Commander – Sustainment , also delivered remarks at the ceremony , emphasizing that the new housing tower is the fourth and final one on the installation , providing a total of 360 spaces for families . The new housing tower on Camp Walker in South Korea is the fourth one constructed over the past decade , representing a $250 million investment in housing for 360 families . Col . Roderick F . Laughman , 8th Army Deputy Commander , expressed excitement about the new addition , stating that it will make the community a great place for families . The U . S . Army Corps of Engineers managed the design and construction of the towers , providing three - , four - , and five - bedroom units with laundry rooms and storage space . Col . David F . Henning , U . S . Army Garrison Commander , emphasized the Army ' s commitment to providing the best conditions for Soldiers and their families through these new facilities . The housing towers offer American - style layouts in a format familiar to Koreans , allowing more personnel to live on the installation and have easy access to amenities . Col . Heather Levy , U . S . Army Corps of Engineers Commander , noted the unique experience of living in these towers , which offer a mix of familiarity and new experiences for military families . As the design and construction agent for the Department of Defense in South Korea , USACE FED had the opportunity to witness these projects go from initial discussions and plans to actual construction and residents moving in . Representatives from various military units and organizations , along with the first family to live in the tower , participated in a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of the facility on Feb . 29 , 2024 . This tower is the fourth one built on the base in the past ten years , with an investment of around $250 million to enhance the quality of life for 360 families stationed there . "Ribbon cuttings allow us to reflect on the lessons we ' ve learned throughout the project , " Levy said . Throughout the years , the team identified the need for improved HVAC capabilities and utility adjustments to make the towers more comfortable for residents . "USACE is not just a learning organization in name , but in practice , " Levy added . "We made sure to apply these lessons to ensure that the next facility we built would be even better . " The ribbon cutting ceremony was attended by members of the project delivery team at all stages , including the civil engineer and architect who designed the facility , as well as the resident office members who monitored the construction activities . Despite the completion of the family housing towers , there are still future plans for improving the quality of life at USAG Daegu , such as the construction of an Army lodge and an elementary school . "We can be confident that the future looks bright for USAG Daegu , " Henning concluded .
