The new heat illness prevention technology allows command units to monitor a Warfighter ' s health in real - time in the field . With guidance from the U . S . Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine ' s Thermal & Mountain Medicine Division , Marine Sgt . Farias with RTR S4 can keep a close eye on Marines ' vulnerability to heat injuries by tracking variables like heart rate and estimated core temperature . Heat injuries can be a serious threat in hot , humid climates , potentially leading to heat stroke , exhaustion , or cramps . The U . S . Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine has developed the Heat Illness Prevention System ( HIPS ) to address this issue . HIPS provides unit leaders with real - time information on a Service Member ' s heat illness risk , monitoring factors such as heart rate , skin temperature , core temperature , and gait stability . By using a sensor , algorithms , and a real - time viewing application , leaders can track and prevent heat illnesses before they occur . The sensor , worn on the chest , detects heat levels and assesses the risk of heat illness . When paired with a geolocation device or the Soldier Monitoring System , leadership can monitor the location and heat risk status of their units . This system allows for early intervention and prevention of heat - related injuries . We ' ll be seeing green , yellow , and red colors on the screen to show how our Service Members are doing . Since 2018 , the HIPS device has been improved to detect and help those working in high temperatures . Buller and his team have been working with the Marine Corps at Parris Island and have collected data on training events . Using this data , they have advanced the heat strain index and can now predict heat - related illnesses . The Marine Corps has integrated the device into some training events to prevent heat illness . In the future , the team hopes to predict heat cases at the individual level . This device is seen as a life - saving tool for military personnel . USARIEM is a leading research lab for Warfighter health and performance . USARIEM , based at the Natick Soldier Systems Center in Massachusetts , is all about improving the health and performance of our troops through research .
