A Popeyes franchise has to pay $212K after a Department of Labor investigation found violations of child labor and unpaid overtime . Kids as young as 13 were working at Popeyes locations in the San Francisco Bay Area . The employer , 14th St . Chicken Corp . , operating as Popeyes Chicken & Biscuits , violated child labor laws in their Oakland , Tracy , and Newark stores . They also failed to pay overtime for hours worked over 40 a week . This is the franchisee ' s third citation for breaking labor laws . Previous violations occurred in Oakland and Tracy in 2003 and 2022 . The investigation recovered $39 , 826 in unpaid overtime for 15 employees and imposed $39 , 826 in damages . Additionally , $121 , 104 in civil monetary penalties were issued for child labor violations , and $12 , 104 in fines for unpaid overtime . The Department of Labor remains committed to combating child labor violations in all industries , including fast food . In the fiscal year 2023 , the Department found over 950 child labor violations resulting in more than $8 million in fines .
