Job Title: ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH SPECIALIST II
Department: ENVIRONMENTAL HEATLH
Starting Salary: $51,175 (Range 67)
Definition
:
Under general supervision, inspects and enforces health, sanitation, and environmental regulations and ordinances.
Essential Functions
:

Tasks:
Conducts sanitation inspections of food establishments, including restaurants, grocery stores, delis, bakeries, cafeterias, bars, and temporary food establishments; inspects motels, hotels, trailer, and RV parks for sewage leads, garbage accumulation or washing machine discharge; inspects school cafeterias for proper holding temperatures, personal hygiene, safe food handling practices, and insect and rodent control; reviews floor plans for food establishments for conformance with bulletin 12 and the Uniform Plumbing Code.
Reviews blue prints of on-site sewage disposal systems; verifies proper installation of septic leach lines and tanks; presents food handling safety classes, including the proper temperature for hot and cold holding of food, cleaning and sanitizing; conducts air sample tests; writes investigative and inspection reports; inspects public water systems, public waste water collection and treatment, and solid waste facilities.
Responsible for establishing and updating a variety of plan reviews; manages food program, including the authority to approve and disapprove food establishment construction plans, permit to operate, regulate operations, enforcement for non-compliance and conduct food safety certification classes; trains Sanitarians to perform tasks relating to food protection, wastewater disposal and inspection of swimming pools; performs research on border / bi-national issues regarding pollution.
Knowledge, Skills, and Other Characteristics
:
Knowledge of the principles, concepts, and practices of public health sanitation and environmental protection.
Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws, regulations, ordinances, and codes pertaining to environmental health standards.
Knowledge of Santa Cruz County’s Health Department policies, procedures, and protocols.
Skill in conducting inspections of water and wastewater systems.
Skill in communicating effectively, orally and in writing.
Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with representatives of businesses, federal and state health agencies, County staff, and the general public.
Skill in interviewing, investigating, observing, and examining facilities.
Skill in writing violations cease and desist orders and reports.
Skill in conducting air sample tests.
Skill in managing and monitoring major sanitation programs and projects.
Skill in training, assisting, and supervising Sanitarians and Sanitarian Aides.
Qualifications
:
Bachelor’s degree in the biological sciences or five (5) years on the job training as a Sanitary Aide. Registered Sanitarian certificate. Driver’s license.
