The U . S . Department of Energy ( DOE ) has announced new energy efficiency standards for residential clothes washers and dryers that will save American households billions of dollars annually on their utility bills and reduce carbon emissions . These updated standards , supported by industry leaders and consumer advocates , are expected to provide significant savings and environmental benefits over the next 30 years . The DOE is committed to implementing energy - saving measures across various appliances and equipment to reduce costs for consumers and combat climate change . These actions align with President Biden ' s agenda to invest in America and promote sustainability . In 2024 , the Administration will keep making progress on finalizing cost - saving standards based on feedback from different groups . For residential clothes washers , the new efficiency standards align with recommendations from manufacturers , trade associations , energy and environmental groups , states , and utilities . These standards will be required from March 1 , 2028 . The energy savings over 30 years will be equivalent to 3% less energy used compared to current products on the market , saving consumers almost $18 billion and reducing carbon emissions . The same goes for residential clothes dryers , with even higher energy savings and cost reductions . To learn more about saving money on energy costs , consumers can check out DOE ' s Energy Savings Hub , which provides information on clean energy tax credits and rebates .
