The Biden - Harris Administration is looking into the security risks of connected vehicles due to national security concerns . The U . S . Department of Commerce is seeking public input on regulations to protect the supply chain for connected vehicles , specifically those with technology from China . Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo emphasized the importance of addressing potential risks posed by foreign access to connected vehicles . Under Secretary Alan Estevez highlighted the need to stay vigilant against threats of espionage and sabotage in the digital age . The inquiry aims to assess the extent of foreign technology in connected vehicles and determine if action is necessary to protect national security . This ANPRM shows the Biden - Harris Administration ' s proactive efforts to deal with the potential national security risks connected to ICTS in CVs , and it ' s a big step in advancing the ICTS mission . In this ANPRM , the Department wants to hear your thoughts on a few things , like definitions , how certain types of ICTS transactions in CVs could pose risks to US national security , ways to address these risks through prohibitions or mitigation measures , and whether to create a process for the public to request approval for otherwise prohibited transactions if they can show that the risk to national security is sufficiently reduced in a specific case . The Office of Information and Communications Technology and Services ( OICTS ) is responsible for implementing this ANPRM under Executive Order 13873 . OICTS focuses on protecting domestic information and communications systems from threats by foreign adversaries . Check out www . bis . doc . gov for more info .
