Capt . Jacquelynn Watson , DVM , the officer - in - charge at Fort Novosel Veterinary Treatment Facility , takes care of Military Working Dog Daryl on Jan . 31 , 2024 . Capt . Watson , along with Cpl . Kelly Schweitzer , works with Military Working Dog Daryl at the Fort Novosel Veterinary Treatment Facility on the same day . On Jan . 31 , 2024 , Capt . Watson , DVM , the officer - in - charge at Fort Novosel Veterinary Treatment Facility , provides care for a retiree ' s cat during a wellness exam . In Fort Novosel , Alabama , military veterinarians have various responsibilities , including serving as post food inspectors and providing medical care for all military working dogs ( MWD ) assigned to the installation . According to Capt . Watson , her favorite part of the job is working with the military working dogs . She emphasizes the strong bond between the VTF and the 906th Military Working Dog Detachment , which allows for easy collaboration and support . Military veterinarians are USDA accredited , enabling them to issue health certificates required for overseas duty stations . Capt . Watson ensures that active - duty service members with orders requiring certificates for their animals are given priority for appointments . The VTF offers a range of routine dog and cat services , including vaccines , check - ups , microchipping , flea and tick prevention , ultrasound , radiology , and simple surgeries . However , due to limited personnel , surgeries may be challenging to schedule . Appointments are available from Monday to Wednesday , and Fridays are primarily reserved for working dogs and administrative tasks . In some cases , patients may need to be referred off post if appointments are not made in advance . The primary focus of the VTF is to serve the installation and its members . We do the best we can with the limited staff we have . The prices for the VTF service may not always be cheaper than off post facilities in Alabama . The Army determines the pricing , but the money goes back into the Fort Novosel community . Some service members mistakenly think their pets ' checkups are free or covered by insurance , but Tricare doesn ' t currently cover our furry family members . Despite having a small team with multiple roles , the Fort Novosel VTF cares deeply for their animal patients . If you live on post , make sure to register your pets when you arrive .
