The U . S . Department of Energy announced today that over $17 million from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law will be used to fund energy efficiency improvements and clean energy technologies for public facilities and low - income homes in 30 communities . The Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant Program will distribute the funds to various states , local governments , tribes , and territories to help them reduce carbon emissions , lower overall energy use , and save residents money on energy . This program , funded by President Biden ' s infrastructure law , supports a wide range of energy projects and aims to help communities lower energy costs and plan for a clean energy future . U . S . Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm highlighted the flexibility of the program funding and its ability to align with existing energy plans in communities . Since the program ' s inception , it has awarded over $91 million to 97 communities , with this latest round of funds being used for projects such as solarizing schools , developing electric transportation programs , and retrofitting low - income homes . One example mentioned is Guam ' s plan to install solar panels , battery storage , and solar LED lights in government buildings to improve light quality , climate resilience , and operational costs . The money saved from using clean energy upgrades will help community centers focus on providing more programs for underserved youth . In North Carolina , there will be a program to help local governments make their facilities more energy efficient and use renewable energy sources . Similar initiatives will take place in Las Vegas , New Bedford , Cuyahoga County , Carolina , Puerto Rico , the Cachil DeHe Band of Wintun Indians , and the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma . These projects will not only save money and energy but also contribute to reducing carbon emissions and improving the environment . Our technical consultants will be teaming up with the Nation ' s Energy Management Team to help them reach their energy goals and track their progress . The award amount for this project is $82 , 030 . Other awards announced today include funding for various cities and states . The deadline for Tribes to apply for funding has been extended to May 31 , 2025 , while local governments have until April 30 , 2024 .
