☷Biden Harris Administration Announces More Than $6 Million in New Grants to Address Community Violence and its Impacts on Student Mental Health

Today , Vice President Kamala Harris announced that the U . S . Department of Education is giving $6 . 4 million to address community violence . This money will be given to seven school districts across the country through the Project Prevent grant program . Vice President Harris made the announcement in Charlotte , North Carolina , along with U . S . Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona . They want to highlight the Biden - Harris Administration ' s efforts to reduce gun violence and provide better mental health services for students . Project Prevent grants help local school districts that have been affected by community violence . The grants help these districts implement strategies to prevent and address the impacts of community violence . In fiscal year 2024 , seven new grants totaling around $6 . 4 million will be given . We ' ve got 4 million bucks to help schools and community organizations team up and support students dealing with violence and trauma . This includes providing mental health services and other resources to break the cycle . These grants will let school districts identify and help students who have experienced community violence by improving access to mental health services and implementing strategies to prevent violence . This is just one more way the Biden - Harris Administration is tackling the issue of community violence in schools . These grants also align with their commitment to improving mental health in America . The Safer Communities Act has provided unprecedented support for youth mental health , including students affected by gun violence . Here ' s a list of the new Project Prevent awardees and how much they ' re getting: Savannah - Chatham County Public School System in Georgia gets $1 , 013 , 113; Osage County Interlocal Cooperative in Oklahoma gets $759 , 624; Buffalo City School District in New York gets $1 , 013 , 113; Tahlequah Public Schools in Oklahoma gets $954 , 196; Mastery Charter Schools in Pennsylvania gets $698 , 584; Norfolk Public Schools in Virginia gets $949 , 264; and Educational Service District 105 in Washington gets $1 , 012 , 267 . In total , it adds up to $6 , 400 , 161 .
