☷Biden Harris Administration Announces $623 Million in Grants to Continue Building Out Electric Vehicle Charging Network

U.S. Department of Transportation
| 36| 1
The Biden - Harris Administration just announced that they ' re giving out $623 million in grants to expand the electric vehicle ( EV ) charging network in the U . S . This will create jobs and make it easier for people to charge their EVs at home , work , and when they ' re out shopping . The goal is to have at least 500 , 000 charging stations available to the public by 2030 . Under President Biden ' s leadership , EV sales have skyrocketed , and there are now over 4 million EVs on the road . These grants are part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law ' s funding program and will support 47 EV charging projects in various states . The funding will also go towards building charging stations along highways . The Federal Highway Administration is investing $311 million in 36 community projects , including two Indian Tribes , to improve EV charging infrastructure in both urban and rural areas . Examples of the grants awarded in this round include $10 million to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection for the construction of EV charging stations in disadvantaged communities and rural areas , with a focus on areas near transit stations to promote shared transportation services . The Maryland Clean Energy Center will receive $15 million to build 87 electric vehicle charging stations in urban , suburban , and low - and moderate - income communities . The North Central Texas Council of Governments will receive $70 million to establish up to five hydrogen fueling stations for medium - and heavy - duty freight trucks in several cities . Federal Highway Administrator Shailen Bhatt expressed the Federal Highway Administration ' s pleasure in announcing these grants , which will bring EV charging and alternative fuels to people and communities across the nation . These investments will expand the national EV charging network , support President Biden ' s goal of achieving net - zero emissions by 2050 , and provide opportunities for all Americans to benefit from EV charging . U . S . Transportation Deputy Secretary Polly Trottenberg highlighted the importance of having electric vehicle charging options available in local communities , in addition to highways . The USDOT is proud to invest in projects that provide Americans with convenient charging options in their own communities . U . S . Secretary of Energy Jennifer M . Granholm stated that every community in the country should have access to convenient and reliable clean transportation . The Biden - Harris Administration is working towards this goal by establishing a charging network that is made in America and accessible to thousands of communities , while also reducing carbon pollution . An additional $312 million will be allocated to 11 recipients who have projects along roadways designated as Alternative Fuel Corridors . These projects aim to fill gaps in the national charging and alternative - fueling network . The CFI Program supports President Biden ' s Justice40 Initiative , which aims to ensure that 40% of federal investments benefit disadvantaged communities that have been marginalized and affected by pollution . Over 70% of the CFI funding will be used for projects in these communities . The project is gonna help create a hydrogen corridor from southern California to Texas . They ' re giving $15 million to the County of Contra Costa in California to build a bunch of fast chargers and regular chargers at different library locations . They ' re also giving $15 million to Energy Northwest in Washington State to install chargers in western Washington and northern Oregon . This project is gonna give electric vehicle access to rural and disadvantaged communities , including Indigenous Tribal lands . They ' re also giving $12 million to the City of Mesa in Arizona to build electric vehicle chargers , charging docks for e - bikes and e - scooters , and solar canopies . And they ' re giving $1 . 4 million to the Chilkoot Indian Association in Alaska to build a charging station in a rural and disadvantaged community . In order to provide a consistent charging experience , the chargers funded by CFI need to meet certain standards . The FHWA is working with the Joint Office of Energy and Transportation to help plan and implement a national network of electric vehicle chargers and zero - emission fueling infrastructure . You can find a full list of grant recipients on their website . If you want more info on President Biden ' s infrastructure law and investments in electric vehicles , you can visit the FHWA ' s website .
