The US Department of Labor has fined a Popeyes franchise in Michigan $48K for allowing children to work longer hours than allowed by child labor laws . The franchise , operated by Michigan Multi - King Inc . , was found to have employed 63 teens aged 14 and 15 who worked more than 18 hours when school was in session and worked past 7 p . m . before June 1 and past 9 p . m . between June 1 and Labor Day . The Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division imposed civil money penalties on the employer for the violations . Wage and Hour District Director Timolin Mitchell in Detroit emphasized the importance of employers following child labor laws while allowing teens to gain work experience . The Fair Labor Standards Act prohibits 14 - and 15 - year - olds from working past 9 p . m . from June 1 through Labor Day and past 7 p . m . the rest of the year . They are also not allowed to work more than 3 hours on a school day , 8 hours on a non - school day , or more than 18 hours per week . The law also prohibits minors from operating motor vehicles , forklifts , and other hazardous equipment . To help employers avoid violations and educate young workers and their parents , the Division has published "Seven Child Labor Best Practices for Employers . " The Department of Labor established an Interagency Task Force to Combat Child Labor Exploitation in February 2023 and in the same fiscal year , identified child labor violations in 955 cases , resulting in over $8 million in penalties for employers . The Division provides a search tool for individuals who believe they are owed back wages and offers an online complaint filing system . Employees and employers can also seek confidential compliance assistance by calling the agency ' s toll - free helpline . The agency has also launched the Timesheet App for iOS and Android devices to ensure accurate recording of hours and pay .
