So , in these scams , people are tricked into thinking they ' re in a relationship with someone , then they end up sending money , financial info , or personal stuff to the scammer . Some folks even get tricked into helping with money laundering . These scammers have a whole routine down and treat it like a full - time gig . They ' ll spend months building up the relationship before asking for anything valuable . Hey y ' all , the FBI in Atlanta is giving a heads up about a bunch of Romance/Confidence scams expected to happen around Valentine’s Day . Last year , around 425 folks in Georgia got scammed , losing a whopping $10 , 516 , 818 . And that ' s not even counting the rest of the country , where 19 , 800 victims lost a crazy $735 , 000 , 000 . And trust me , those numbers are just the ones that were reported . The FBI thinks there are way more victims who never speak up . To avoid becoming a victim , be careful about what you share online . Stick to dating apps with a good reputation , but remember that scammers could still be lurking there too . Take it slow in a relationship and ask questions . Look up the person ' s picture and profile to make sure they ' re not pretending to be someone else . And if you suspect a scam , cut off contact right away and report it to the FBI at IC3 . gov . If any media outlets in Georgia are interested , you can set up interviews with the FBI ' s Supervisory Special Agent over financial fraud on Thursday , February 8th from 10 a . m . to around 1 p . m . We can also talk about the possibility of doing interviews in person at the studio .
