The Department of Energy ( DOE ) has announced funding for two marine energy projects in the United States . These projects , which aim to develop tidal energy research , development , and demonstration sites , as well as river current energy research and development , will receive a total of $15 . 5 million . The funding supports the Biden - Harris Administration ' s clean energy goals and encourages U . S . leadership in marine energy development . By harnessing the power of tides and currents , these projects can contribute to a clean energy grid and provide reliable power to rural and remote communities . The DOE ' s investment reflects the industry ' s progress and aims to transition from single device testing to array testing . One project led by OPALCO in Washington State plans to deploy a tidal energy turbine in Rosario Strait , while another project led by ORPC in Alaska aims to deploy two tidal energy devices . The community - led river current energy project aims to balance community energy priorities and promote the development of current energy technologies in Yukon River and Alaska Native communities . With an investment of $9 . 5 million , this project will help accelerate technology development and economic growth in these communities . The University of Alaska Fairbanks’ Alaska Center for Energy and Power is leading the project , which plans to create a replicable , community - led research and development project in the Yukon River at Galena , Alaska . The main goal is to identify and develop a technology that suits the community ' s needs . This project will also help overcome obstacles to the development of hydrokinetic energy projects in Alaska ' s many communities with microgrids on or near rivers . These projects were selected as part of the Water Power Technologies Office’s U . S . Tidal Energy Advancement funding opportunity . For more information on this and other water power funding opportunities , visit their website . Please note that the selection for award negotiations does not guarantee funding . Both the DOE and the applicants will go through a negotiation process , and the DOE reserves the right to cancel negotiations and rescind the selection for any reason .
