Most victims of sextortion are guys aged 14 to 17 , but anyone can be targeted . The offenders usually operate from places like Nigeria , Ivory Coast , or the Philippines . In the six - month period from October 2022 to March 2023 , the FBI saw a 20% increase in reporting of sextortion cases compared to the previous year . There ' s also another type of sextortion where the offender tries to get money out of the victim . They threaten to release the explicit material unless they get paid , usually through things like gift cards , mobile payments , wire transfers , or cryptocurrency . These guys are all about the money , not just the sexual stuff . These crimes can seriously mess with victims ' heads and have even led to suicides . From October 2021 to March 2023 , the FBI received over 13 , 000 reports of sextortion involving minors . At least 12 , 600 kids were victimized , and sadly , there were at least 20 suicides .
