Michael Stewart , a 29 - year - old guy from Washington , D . C . , got sentenced today for possessing a firearm and ammo while being a convicted felon , and for intending to distribute some drug called N , N - Dimethylpentylone . This news was announced by U . S . Attorney Matthew M . Graves , Chief Pamela Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department ( MPD ) , and Special Agent in Charge Craig Kailimai of the Bureau of Alcohol , Tobacco , Firearms and Explosives Washington Field Division . Stewart will spend 46 months in jail followed by 3 years of supervised release , as ordered by U . S . District Court Judge Tanya Chutkan . He pleaded guilty to the charges on October 25 , 2023 , and has been in custody since January 8 , 2023 . The government ' s evidence shows that on November 6 , 2022 , at around 4:30 p . m . , officers went to the Beacon Hotel on Rhode Island Avenue and arrested Stewart . They searched his room and found an untraceable gun under the bed , along with some ammo . They also found Stewart ' s bookbag containing a scale , some cash , and a significant amount of N - Ethylpentylone , which is a controlled substance . Later on , during a search at the courthouse , law enforcement found more of this substance on Stewart . On December 7 , 2022 , officers arrested Stewart again , this time for publicly smoking marijuana , and found even more drugs and drug - related items on him . Then , on January 8 , 2023 , officers spotted Stewart in the area of 7th and T Streets and chased him after he started running away . Stewart was then caught by the police , and they found a black Ruger SR9C gun on him . The gun had one bullet in the chamber and fifteen bullets in the magazine . The extended magazine could hold a total of 17 bullets . They discovered that the gun was stolen from Atlanta , Georgia . The officers also found two folded $1 bills with white powder , a scale , $435 in small bills , and 61 . 8 grams of N , N - Dimethylpentylone . When announcing the sentence , U . S . Attorney Graves , Special Agent in Charge Kailimai , and Chief Smith praised the work done by those who investigated the case from Project Safe Neighborhoods , including the Metropolitan Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol , Tobacco , Firearms and Explosives . They also recognized the efforts of the U . S . Attorney ' s Office , particularly paralegal Specialist Karla Nunez . Assistant U . S . Attorney Shehzad Akhtar and former Special Assistant U . S . Attorney Lauren Renaud handled the prosecution , with valuable assistance from Chief of Federal Major Crimes Melissa Jackson .
