Col . Steve McGunegle , the commander of U . S . Army Garrison Hawaii , had a chat with a local reporter about the benefits of the power generating station in Schofield Barracks . This 50 megawatt facility , built in 2016 , sits on 8 acres in Wahiawa and cost $167 million . It ' s the only power generation facility on Oahu that ' s not at risk from tsunamis . The station , also known as a micro grid , can provide power to military bases and the community grid within two hours of a request . During heavy rains on January 8 , 2024 , the station was activated and supplied 40 MW to the community grid when other power sources went offline . It runs on locally produced bio - diesel and can operate without interruption for about a week . The station is part of the Army ' s larger effort to use renewable fuels and become more sustainable across its 22 sites on Oahu .
