☷Wyoming Man Sentenced to 12 Years in Prison for Meth Trafficking in Miles City Area

A guy from Wyoming was sentenced to 12 years in prison today for trafficking meth in the Miles City area . After his prison term , he ' ll be on supervised release for 5 years . Elmer Richard Petersen , a 45 - year - old from Gillette , Wyoming , pleaded guilty in September 2023 to having drugs with the intent to sell them and being in possession of a firearm when he wasn ' t supposed to . The judge in the case was Susan P . Watters . According to court documents , law enforcement stopped Petersen in Miles City in October 2021 because they thought he was dealing drugs . They let him go , but they took his car . Later , they searched the car with a warrant and found a 9mm pistol , about three pounds of meth , and $10 , 000 in cash . In December 2021 , the police got a tip that Petersen was back in Miles City . They found him at a hotel and tried to arrest him on a warrant from Wyoming . He ran away , but they caught him after a short chase . When they arrested him , they found a . 380 - caliber pistol in his pocket . Petersen couldn ' t have guns because of a previous felony conviction in Wyoming . The U . S . Attorney ' s Office handled the case , and the investigation involved the Bureau of Alcohol , Tobacco , Firearms and Explosives , the Drug Enforcement Administration , the Montana Division of Criminal Investigation , the Montana Highway Patrol , and the Miles City Police Department . This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods ( PSN ) , which is a program that brings together law enforcement and the community to reduce violent crime and gun violence and make neighborhoods safer . On May 26 , 2021 , the Department launched a strategy to reduce violent crime by strengthening PSN . The strategy focuses on building trust in communities , supporting organizations that prevent violence , setting enforcement priorities , and measuring results .
