January is OpsSec Awareness Month and this year ' s theme is Preventing and Reporting Unauthorized Disclosures . An unauthorized disclosure happens when people within our organization share classified info or controlled unclassified info with someone who shouldn ' t have it . Good OpsSec practices help us avoid leaks of non - public info , which is important for national security and public trust . Remember that authorized recipients must be eligible and have a need - to - know before any disclosure . Any unauthorized disclosure could result in administrative action or even criminal investigation . Here are some ways to protect info and prevent unauthorized disclosures: If you ' re a federal employee , make sure you follow the rules before publicly releasing any DoD info . When using social media , the same rules apply for protecting classified and sensitive info . Don ' t publicly confirm or verify any info that needs protection . Refer all media inquiries to the Public Affairs Office . Posting non - public or classified info on social media or public websites is not allowed . Using language processing tools for certain DoD documents is also not allowed . Executive Order 13526 , DoDM 5200 . 01 , and the National Industrial Security Program Operating Manual provide guidelines for safeguarding classified info . Use cover sheets when handling info outside of approved containers . Keep classified information in approved security containers or other approved methods . Follow guidelines for copying , transmitting , and disposing of classified information . Remember , you must protect classified information even after you ' re no longer an employee . If you suspect or discover an unauthorized disclosure , take possession of the material and secure it . Report the unauthorized disclosure to the appropriate authorities , who will investigate and impose sanctions if necessary . Federal employees must report unauthorized disclosures to the media , non - government websites , physical loss or theft , and release to unauthorized recipients . Protecting classified information is vital for our nation ' s safety and success .
