A group of soldiers from the 100th Missile Defense Brigade in California took a photo at the entrance to an ICBM launch tube on Vandenberg Space Force Base . These soldiers , who are part of the California Army National Guard , embody the National Guard ' s motto of always being ready and always being there . They operate the Ground Missile Defense facilities and equipment in a remote building , working to intercept and destroy incoming ordnance like International Continental Ballistic Missiles . Despite their small size , they provide round - the - clock monitoring and support for the Fire Direction Center . Recently , they successfully launched a Ground - Based Interceptor missile from Vandenberg SFB to intercept and destroy a simulated missile attack . This incredible feat took place in space , just moments after the missile was launched from thousands of miles away . The 100th Missile Defense Brigade is made up of roughly 300 soldiers from the California National Guard , the Colorado National Guard , and the Alaskan National Guard , all dedicated to protecting national security . Led by Army Capt . Scott Hoffman , a former enlisted soldier who has served in all three states , the team is described as dedicated professionals who are always up for the job . Many of the team members came from various states to fulfill the mission and meet the unit ' s operational needs . I ' m super proud of this team because we ' re on a 24/7 - 365 mission , and they totally rock it despite all the challenges . If I had to tell the American public something , it would be that they can totally chill knowing that we ' ve got their back and we ' ll defend our homeland .
