Scammers in El Paso , TX are getting smarter and using new technology to trick unsuspecting victims . They ' ve gotten really good at pretending to be legitimate organizations , without making as many grammar mistakes or raising red flags . These scammers have taken check fraud to a whole new level called "check cooking" or "check baking . " It ' s a more profitable and efficient method that allows them to easily make fake checks and deposit them into multiple accounts . All they need is a digital photo of a stolen check and some commercially available software to alter it . They ' ll create several checks with small amounts so they don ' t raise suspicion . By the time anyone notices , the scammer could have made off with thousands of dollars . To stay safe , consider using a safer payment method like a credit card . If you still need to write paper checks , don ' t mail them from your home; drop them off at the nearest post office instead . Check your mail daily to make sure no one steals a check or other important mail from your mailbox . Keep a close eye on your personal and business checking accounts for any suspicious transactions . If you become a victim of fake checks , contact your bank immediately and file a police report with your local department .
