Scammers in El Paso , Texas are getting smarter and using new tricks to fool people . They are even able to copy real organizations without making many mistakes . One new scam is called "check cooking" or "check baking . " It ' s a way for scammers to make fake checks and deposit them into different bank accounts . They just take a picture of a stolen check and use special software to change it . Then they make lots of small checks so no one notices . By the time someone realizes what ' s happening , the scammer could have taken thousands of dollars . To protect yourself , it ' s a good idea to use a credit card instead of checks . If you have to use checks , drop them off at the post office instead of mailing them . Also , check your mailbox every day to make sure no one steals your mail . And always keep an eye on your bank accounts for any strange activity . If you become a victim of check cooking , contact your bank right away and report it to the police . You can also report it to the FBI online or by calling their office in El Paso .
