To conform with state law and lessen the barrier to entry for sidewalk vendors to operate in the City of Reno , Councilmembers adopted a new Sidewalk Vendor Ordinance .
Senate Bill ( SB ) 92was approved during the 2023 Nevada Legislative Session and it requires specific guidelines for vendors starting in 2024 . These guidelines include rules about getting a license , where they can operate , and the conditions they must follow .
Currently , the City has its own rules for sidewalk vendors , but an update to current RMC is needed to match a new state law . The updated ordinance reclassifies sidewalk vending as a standard license , not a privileged one , and removes assigned locations .
The City will also create and post a map on the City website displaying the zones where a person may engage in sidewalk vending . Before securing a business license from the City , interested sidewalk vendors must obtain a
health permitfrom Northern Nevada Public Health .

Councilmembers accepted a $500 , 000 grant from the
United States Department of Agriculture ( USDA ) and US Forest Service as part of the federal government’s effort to plant and maintain trees , combat extreme heat , and improve access to nature in cities across the nation . By 2027 , the City will plant 132 trees along Airway Drive , including the median , sidewalks , and other open space along the street with this funding .
“Because of drought and other reasons , urban forests in our State have experienced a steady decline , ” said Suzanne Groneman , Reno’s Sustainability Manager . “But in Reno , we are changing that narrative . Getting this grant allows us to expand the tree canopy , especially near the warmest part of our town: the airport . ”
Due to the proximity to the airport , the City worked with airport officials to select the location , and trees that attract large birds of prey , including fruit and nut trees , will not be planted .
“We are thrilled to receive this grant from our federal partners , ” said Vice Mayor Naomi Duerr . “The expansion of our urban forest is a win for all northern Nevadans . Once planted and established , the entire community will benefit from these new trees as they help to cool urban spaces . ”
