The
Reno Fire Department ( RFD ) shares flammable liquid safety tips to help prevent injuries during National Burn Awareness Week from the American Burn Association which runs from February 4 - 10 , 2024 .
“From cooking oils to gasoline , there are plenty of liquids we use each day that can pose a major fire risk , ” said John Mandell , Interim Fire Prevention Chief from the Reno Fire Department . “It might not always be the top of mind , but people should always exercise caution to prevent avoidable accidents . ”
RFD and the American Burn Association have compiled the following tips to help prevent injuries and keep the community safe:
Gasoline:
Use gasoline outdoors only , and store in cool , well - ventilated areas .
Start charcoal grills only with fluid labeled as "charcoal starter fluid . ”
Keep gasoline in a secure location , out of the reach of children .
Use containers that have been listed , labeled , or approved for gasoline .
Fill equipment with gas when engines are cool .
Do not siphon gasoline by mouth .
Do not use gasoline near a flame source such as burning leaves or brush .
Do not induce vomiting if gasoline is swallowed .
Do not use gasoline as a cleaning fluid or solvent .
Do not store gasoline in the house .
Kitchen fire safety tips:
Never mix water and oil .
If a fire occurs in the oven or microwave , shut the appliance door and allow the flames to use up the oxygen to die down .
Don ' t fan the flames . That only gives a fire more oxygen for growth .
Keep the kitchen fire inside . Never carry a burning pan , this only increases the potential to spread the fire across your house and to your clothes and body .
If a small fire occurs in a frying pan , cover it to smother it using a metal lid or cookie sheet .
If you have a multi - purpose extinguisher , use it . If the fire area is too big , get out and call 911 .
