City of Reno Nevada - Reno Community Partners Celebrate Black History Month with Events and Educational Initiatives 01 January 2100 ( news )

This Black History Month , the City of Reno is proud to partner with the Northern Nevada Black Cultural Awareness Society ( NNBCAS ) , Our Story , Inc . , and Tabnie ( Tab - nee ) Dozier ( doh - zsher ) Enterprises to offer a series of events , educational materials , and other opportunities for the community to be involved and support throughout February .
Black History Month commemorates a more balanced and accurate picture of Black history . Through community activities happening throughout the month , the public can learn about and celebrate the countless contributions of the Black community in the Biggest Little City and the world , in areas including education , medicine , art , culture , public service , economic development , politics , and human rights .
"Black history is America ' s history . As one of our area ' s only Black - woman owned media companies , it is our honor to uplift the magnificent efforts and achievements of Black Nevadans . From the healthcare , law enforcement , education , and other public service sectors , to various phenomenal leaders in the corporate space and we can ' t forget the unwavering dedication of small business owners , this is a fabulous time to celebrate and fellowship with residents , " Tabnie Dozier , CEO of Tabnie Dozier Enterprises says .

The BELIEVE sign in Reno City Plaza will be illuminated in
red , yellow and greenthroughout Black History Month , symbolizing solidarity , unity , and pride .
The City of Reno , NNBCAS , Our Story , Inc . , and Tabnie Dozier Enterprises will host a special Black History Month Celebration on February 15 at 5:00 PM at City Plaza . This celebration will feature a lighting of the BELIEVE sign , Unity Walk , proclamation reading , and a reception . More details will be released prior to the event .
The Reno Fire Department is also supporting Black History Month by holding a t - shirt sale , with proceeds contributing to the Northern Nevada African American Firefighters Museum through Our Story , Inc .

Learn About Black History in Reno
A Black Springs Homecoming: Finding History will air on PBS Reno on February 6 , 2024 , at 9 p . m . and again on February 9 , 2024 , at 11:30 p . m . This award - winning documentary tells the story of Black Springs — a small , historically African American neighborhood six miles north of downtown Reno — and the ability of its residents to establish an enduring sense of community in the face of widespread racial discrimination and economic hardship . Residents can
join Nevada Humanities and PBS Renoon February 9 , 2024 , for a watch party celebrating the inaugural public airing .
Finally , people can support by
purchasing the book ' A Cry for Help ' by Reno - based author Helen Townsell to learn more about Black Springs .
