Role Overview
Performs intermediate protective services work responding to fires and emergency medical service calls, performing fire suppression and emergency medical response, maintaining station and equipment, and participating in continuing training. Supports and promotes the mission of the Department. Employees may be subject to the usual hazards of emergency response work. Work is performed under the close supervision of the Captain and Lieutenant.
Role Description
Responds to life safety emergencies, including fire, hazardous materials, and emergency medical services; performs basic and advanced life support; drives and operates various types of emergency response vehicles and equipment.
Leads, directs, and participates in patient care activities; examines patients, provides care, and reports findings; transports patients to medical facilities.
Performs full range of fire suppression duties; assists in performing high-angle, trench, confined space, and water rescues; assists in performing rescues from hazardous situations, including motor vehicle accidents, collapsed buildings, and structure fires.
Inspects apparatus and equipment daily; performs maintenance on specialized apparatus and equipment for firefighting, basic life support, and advanced life support; conducts fire safety inspections and pre-fire planning.
Cleans and maintains station, apparatus, and equipment on a daily basis.
Helps deliver and participates in training efforts.
Ensures compliance with all applicable County policies and procedures; ensures compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.
Represents the Department and the County in a positive and professional manner.
Supports and encourages positive relationships between career and volunteer personnel.
Attends and participates in professional meetings, training, and workshops.
Performs related tasks, as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of firefighting techniques and procedures; thorough knowledge of emergency medical techniques and procedures; general knowledge of the street system, physical layout, and geography of the County; general knowledge of basic and advanced life support methods, procedures, and equipment; general knowledge of hazardous materials and related emergency response; general knowledge of vehicle or structure extrication techniques and procedures; knowledge of State and Federal Fire and EMS laws and regulations; ability to perform duties in emergency situations; ability to work at heights or in confined spaces; ability to exercise sound judgement; ability to follow oral and written instructions; and ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, volunteers, other officials, and the public.
Education and Experience
High School Diploma or GED with certifications and training as indicated below in the Special Requirements section. Minimal experience in Fire Protection, Emergency Management, or Emergency Medical Services. Other equivalent education and work experience may be considered in meeting the minimum education and experience requirements.
Physical Requirements
This work requires the regular exertion of up to 20 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 75 pounds of force, and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle, or feel, standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching with hands and arms, climbing or balancing, pushing or pulling, lifting, and repetitive motions; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, night vision, and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm’s length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment, and observing general surroundings and activities; worker is frequently exposed to outdoor weather conditions, vibration, fumes, bloodborne pathogens, or airborne particles, and may be required to wear self-contained breathing apparatus or specialized personal protective equipment; performance of essential functions may be performed in high, precarious places, and may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, weather, temperature, noise extremes, hazardous materials, traffic hazards, bright/dim lights, explosives, disease, or pathogenic substances.
Special Requirements
Should possess or be able to obtain certifications and training, including AHA Advanced Cardiac life support (ACLS) and AHA Pediatric Life Support (PALS), Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS), Virginia Paramedic or Virginia Intermediate, Mass Casualty Incident Management I and II, *VDFP Firefighter 1 and 2 and *VDFP Hazmat operations within two years of hire. *Blue Card Incident Command, Vehicle Extrication, and *VDFP driver pump operator. Driver Pump Operator (DPO) within three years of hire.
Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia with an acceptable driving record and one year of documented driving experience.
Designation as Essential Staff.
Mandatory wearing of uniform and use of safety equipment, as appropriate.
Must meet current physical condition requirements and maintain physical requirements, as required by standard operating procedures, including at least thirty (30) minutes of physical fitness activity each workday.
Subject to pre-employment criminal background check, including fingerprinting.
Subject to pre-employment physical examination and drug test, repeated in accordance with policy thereafter.
