E - Week continues as we celebrate the ingenuity and creativity of engineers who are shaping the world around us . Today , we are highlighting Introduce a Girl to Engineering , or Girl Day!
Women have been pivotal in shaping engineering throughout history , even though they have historically been underrepresented in the field . Thankfully , there is increasing recognition of the importance of diversity and inclusivity in engineering . This has led to efforts to enhance women ' s participation in engineering , laying the groundwork for a fairer and more diverse future in the field .
For Girl Day , we wanted to put the spotlight on one of our very own amazing women engineers! Development Review and Coordination Engineer , Maggie Allison , gave this wonderful advice for those interested in engineering .
What made you pursue engineering and how long have you been an engineer?
I pursued engineering because I have always loved math and science , so engineering was an easy choice . My dad and all of my uncles worked in construction , so civil engineering was something I grew up learning and loving . I have been an engineer for 12 years .
What drew you to the city engineering work over other engineering fields?
Prior to working for the City , I have always been on the consulting side of things . I never felt like I was making a big difference , and I didn’t like the culture of always finding a way to bill for my time . Working for the City allows me to focus on what is important , not finding a way to bill for everything I do .
What’s the most challenging part of your job?
Finding unique solutions when the standard approach isn’t right for a specific development . It can be such a balancing act to find quality ways to utilize the available land in a safe manner .
What’s the most rewarding part of your job?
Making a difference in the community . It feels great looking at a completed project and knowing that you are one of the reasons it turned out the way it did .
What advice would you give to aspiring engineers or those interested in engineering?
Learn as much as you can about all fields of engineering . You never know if you’ll discover an area of engineering that makes you feel more passion . Give yourself as much time as possible to figure out what you love .
