It ' s #EWeek2024 and we are celebrating our engineers making a difference .
This week we will be celebrating the hard work of all engineers during the 2024 Engineers Week . We ' re kicking things off by asking our city engineer , Shawn Poe , a few things about what it means to him to be an engineer .
What made you pursue engineering and how long have you been an engineer?
I have always had a sense of purpose for serving communities and the public . Being an engineer working for public agencies almost my entire career has fully satisfied this goal even though I learn something every day and strive harder to be better at serving others . My uncle went to CU and was a civil engineer and a really cool dude I looked up to as a kid . I struggled between being an engineer or a doctor but knowing the school commitment for becoming a doctor , I decided at the age of 14 to go the engineer route . ( My daughter became a doctor , so it all worked out ) . I have been an engineer for over 29 years and a licensed engineer for 25 of those years .
What drew you to the city engineering work over other engineering fields?
What drew me to municipal engineering was being able to work in several disciplines that people needed for a great quality of life . Being able to be involved with water , sanitary sewer , storm drainage , paving , traffic engineering , and other infrastructure people take for granted every day was very intriguing to me . Getting to be outdoors in the construction field is a plus too .
What’s the most challenging part of your job?
The biggest challenge is not knowing what infrastructure component may fail next . However , this challenge is tempered knowing the Public Works team is ready to respond quickly .
What’s the most rewarding part of your job?
The most rewarding part of my job is getting to work with a great team at C3 as well as getting to meet and serve residents of C3 . Everyone has a story and I like to take the time to find out the story of others while having the opportunity to serve their needs/requests .
What advice would you give to aspiring engineers or those interested in engineering?
Go for it , engineering is fun! Find a mentor involved with engineering . It is hard work but worth it! You will need to be dedicated and disciplined and have a high standard of ethics and integrity to become a great engineer .
