Today , for #EWeek2024 , we are celebrating the many ways in which our engineers are paving the way for a brighter and more diverse future in engineering .
Taking an unconventional path to becoming an engineer is just as important as taking a more routine route . Highlighting our engineers who have done exactly this , we asked Mark Wallis , a Project Manager in Public Works , to share his experience .
What made you pursue engineering and how long have you been an engineer?
I ' ve aspired to be an engineer since elementary school , drawn to the allure of math and science , and the satisfaction of bringing projects to fruition . I ' ve chosen an unconventional path by not immediately pursuing college after high school . Instead , I dedicated 15 years to working in utilities . This decision provided me with invaluable hands - on experience and a deep understanding of how utilities operate on a practical level . Armed with this knowledge , I made the decision to enroll in college and pursue a degree in engineering . This unique journey has not only equipped me with technical skills but also a profound appreciation for the complexities of utility systems . It has allowed me to approach engineering with a deeper understanding of real - world challenges and solutions , ultimately enhancing my ability to make meaningful contributions in the field . I ' ve pursued this passion and have been working as an engineer since 2021 .
What drew you to the city engineering work over other engineering fields?
Dating back to 2004 , my focus has primarily been on municipal work beginning as a utility maintenance worker for the City of Brighton . I enjoy serving and caring for both citizens and fellow community members . Municipal work is perpetual; city infrastructure deteriorates over time , requiring engineers to determine when replacements or improvements are necessary .
What’s the most challenging part of your job?
The hardest part of my job is navigating budget constraints while addressing the extensive workload required to maintain and improve infrastructure . Balancing limited resources with the ever - growing demands for infrastructure upgrades and repairs poses a continuous challenge in managing projects effectively and efficiently . Saving tax dollars where we can whenever we can!
What’s the most rewarding part of your job?
The most rewarding aspect of my job is the knowledge that the infrastructure I am involved in building will benefit future generations , providing lasting impact and support long after my children and grandchildren have grown .
What advice would you give to aspiring engineers or those interested in engineering?
Choosing civil engineering offers a pathway to shaping the world around us in tangible and meaningful ways . One of the most compelling aspects of civil engineering is its direct impact on society , as the structures and systems engineers create enhance the quality of life for countless individuals . Additionally , civil engineering offers a diverse range of career opportunities , allowing professionals to specialize in areas such as transportation , environmental engineering , structural design , and more . Moreover , civil engineering presents continual opportunities for innovation and problem - solving , as engineers tackle complex challenges to meet the evolving needs of society and address issues such as sustainability and resilience . Overall , choosing civil engineering offers the chance to make a lasting and positive difference in the world while pursuing a rewarding and impactful career .
