DURHAM , N . C . –If you’re interested in the rules that regulate how land development occurs in Durham , now is the time to give your input on the Unified Development Ordinance ( UDO ) rewrite that’s underway .
The Durham City - County Planning Department and its team of consultants , led by Code Studio , are hosting two open houses in February to capture input from residents and stakeholders for use in creating a new UDO that will modernize how development takes place .

The UDO re - write comes after the successful adoption of the
new Comprehensive Planby the Durham City Council and Durham County Board of Commissioners in late 2023 . One way to implement the actions in the Comprehensive Plan is the UDO , which is a legally binding set of rules that developers and property owners must follow that regulates how physical development of land is allowed in Durham .
