NEWS RELEASE
    
   Durham , N . C . - The Durham County Board of Elections was one of ten counties selected to participate in an absentee by - mail signature verification pilot program for the 2024 Statewide Primary and Election . This pilot program is required in accordance with Section 48 of
   Session Law 2023 - 140
    , better known as Senate Bill 747 . As required by this law , the State Board of Elections will be providing all ten participating counties with signature verification software and training needed to execute the pilot program . The data collected from this pilot program will be reported to the State Board of Elections and the General Assembly .  
   The Board wants all residents to be aware that Section 48 . ( c ) of Senate Bill 747 prevents properly executed by - mail ballots from being rejected due to failing signature verification . Section 48 . ( c ) states the following: 
   "In implementing the pilot program established in this section , no executed mail - in absentee ballot shall be rejected by the county board of elections for failing any signature verification . All executed mail - in absentee ballots that are otherwise eligible to be counted in accordance with Chapter 163 of the General Statutes shall be counted . "
