Durham , N . C . ( January 24 , 2024 ) - - As the Durham County Sheriff’s Office prepares for its annual review from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies , Inc . ( CALEA® ) , Sheriff Clarence F . Birkhead encourages members of the community to offer comments and feedback regarding DCSO operations .  
   “CALEA is a voluntary process for DCSO to confirm our accreditation , which is a highly prized recognition of public safety professional excellence . While a final review process happens every four years , we submit annual reports and participate in annual remote web - based assessments attesting to continued compliance , " said Sheriff BIrkhead .  
   As part of the annual accreditation process , CALEA has established a public comment portal where residents of Durham County can offer feedback to support our continuous improvement . Visit the portal and leave comments regarding the Durham County Sheriff ' s Office
