The Department of Energy ( DOE ) announced today that it will update its assessments to determine if additional liquefied natural gas ( LNG ) export requests to countries without Free Trade Agreements are in the best interest of the public . The United States is currently the top global exporter of LNG , but DOE wants to ensure that these exports are economically and environmentally sound . As a result , they will temporarily pause pending applications while they update their analysis . This pause will not affect previously authorized exports or our ability to supply our allies . The DOE ' s goal is to ensure affordable energy , strengthen energy security , and protect against climate change . They have been considering these factors for over a decade , but now they need to incorporate new data and changing global circumstances into their decision - making process . The US is set to double its export capacity , putting us ahead of any other country by over 50% . This will greatly benefit our allies in Europe , Asia , and elsewhere . Since 2022 , US LNG has been instrumental in helping Europe reduce its reliance on Russian gas after the invasion of Ukraine . The Department of Energy will consult with national laboratories to ensure accurate analysis and information . Given the ever - changing LNG market , including economic , climate change , and energy security factors , the DOE ' s LNG program will continuously evaluate and adapt . This pause will allow for the integration of these important considerations , with exceptions for urgent national security emergencies . ### .
