DURHAM , NC ( Monday , February 5 , 2024 ) - On the morning of Thursday , February 1 , 2024 , the Durham County Sheriff’s Office was notified that an employee of Federal Storage located at 3802 Angier Ave . was checking the property and observed that multiple storage units were missing locks and had been broken into . During the investigation , detectives from DCSO’s Criminal Investigation Division ( CID ) were able to determine that a yellow Penske box truck was used by an unknown suspect to remove items from the units .
That same evening a deputy on patrol on Fletchers Chapel Road witnessed a truck fitting the description of the vehicle used in the burglary earlier in the day . The deputy conducted a traffic stop during which it was discovered that the driver , identified as 42 - year - old Joshua Alonzo Writz of Durham was in possession of methamphetamine . He was transported to the Durham County Detention Center and held on a $1000 secured bond on a drug charge .
It was later determined that Writz was the suspect in the robbery of the storage units . An arrest warrant was obtained by DCSO CID for 4 counts of Breaking and Entering . He was served the warrant while still detained . He was given a $50 , 000 secured bond and remains in the detention center . Writz has an extensive criminal history with multiple convictions for breaking and entering and larceny .
