The City of Reno is proud to announce Jesse James Ziegler as the next
Reno Poet Laureate
. Ziegler was appointed by the Reno Arts & Culture Commission and will serve as the Reno Poet Laureate from January 2024 to December 2025 .
During his tenure as Reno Poet Laureate , Zeigler will participate in public engagements on behalf of the City to share works of poetry or commentary on Reno life .
“I am honored to serve as the ambassador of the art form to the entire Truckee Meadows region as poetry has always been my first love , ” said Ziegler . “Poetry is the language of bridge building , activism , catharsis , edification and love . I intend to further the art form in our region through community building and community service . ”
Ziegler is the creator and manager of Monday Night Poetry and vice president for Spoken Views Collective . He is a member of the Sierra Literary Cooperative and the Spoken Word/Poetry contributor to Reno Arts News .
He was the first ever Poet in Residence for the Bruka Theatre and held that position for three consecutive seasons continuing on as an artistic consultant . His first collection of poetry FIVE ( 2019 ) was published and brought to life through their annual New Works Festival .
Ziegler opened and hosted the world premieres of Brandon Leake’s original spoken word play ‘Insomnia’ ( Winner of Season 15 AGT ) and has been a performance artist at the annual Utah Arts Festival . He has served as both a host and a judge for the Nevada chapter of the national Poetry Out Loud organization and continues to be the curator and host of a monthly poetry book club Collective Breath .
Established by the Reno City Council in 2014 , the City of Reno Poet Laureate is a distinguished position conferred upon a local poet who has a record of achievements in poetry and ability to advance poetry in the public domain .
