During their time at the National Academy , students receive specialized training from experienced FBI instructors and agents , many of whom are renowned experts in various areas of criminology . They can even earn college credits from the University of Virginia , which has been accrediting National Academy courses for nearly 50 years . The FBI’s National Academy is known worldwide for its academic excellence and offers an intensive 10 - week program focused on leadership , communication , and fitness . Only professionals with outstanding records in their agencies are even considered for this program . Graduates typically have over 20 years of law enforcement experience and often go on to hold high - ranking positions within their respective agencies . Today , four officers from the Houston area were among nearly 200 law enforcement professionals who graduated from the FBI’s National Academy in Quantico , Virginia . This diverse class included men and women from all over the US , as well as military and federal civilian organizations , and even representatives from 23 different countries . FBI Director Christopher Wray gave a speech at the graduation ceremony . Here are the officers from Houston who were part of this session: Assistant Chief Edward Costello from Texas A&M University Police Department , Commander Tridung Tran from Houston ISD Police Department , Lieutenant Melencio Villarreal from Galveston County Sheriff’s Office , and Lieutenant Christopher Zamora from Houston Police Department . Since its establishment in 1935 , over 54 , 980 public safety professionals have graduated from the FBI’s National Academy . The Academy takes place at the same facility in Quantico , Virginia where new FBI agents and intelligence analysts also receive their training .
