The U . S . Department of Education shared updates on their progress with the 2024 - 25 Better FAFSA implementation today . Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona mentioned that they are working hard to make higher education more accessible to students . The Department made technical updates to align with the FAFSA Simplification Act , which will not affect their timeline for processing applications . They expect more students to be eligible for Pell Grants in the upcoming award year . The Department is also offering support to colleges and vendors to help with the implementation process . They will provide technical assistance and support , as well as tools to help schools process student records efficiently . Additionally , they will be deploying support to lower - resourced colleges and conducting needs assessments to provide dedicated help . The Department will also be sending test student records to schools and vendors to streamline the processing of student records . System - generated test ISIRs are a big deal in making sure schools and their vendors can get their systems ready to handle student records when they start coming in March . This follows the test ISIRs that were shared with colleges earlier this month . The Department will keep updating more test ISIRs and open - source tools in a public repository leading up to the processing date . Today ' s news is another step forward in getting the Better FAFSA form up and running and making sure all students can get the most financial aid they ' re entitled to for their education . Along with delivering test ISIRs earlier this month , the Department also announced last week that people without a Social Security number can now submit FAFSA forms in March . They also explained a process for students affected by this issue to submit an incomplete FAFSA form before it ' s completely fixed if they have state or institutional aid or scholarship deadlines to meet .
