GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Responsible for developing and implementing quality youth programs for the Parks & Recreation Department. Ensure group members are safe and engaged in productive activities. This is an active, creative, physically demanding job with some time outside each day.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following duties are normal for this position. It is not designed to contain or be interpreted as a comprehensive inventory of all duties, environmental conditions, or qualifications required of employees assigned to this position. Other duties may be required and assigned.
1.
Assist in creating and implementing lesson plans for age-appropriate learning activities.
2.
Provide appropriate supervision, observation, and monitoring of children/youth during program activities.
3.
Instruct children in health and personal habits such as eating, resting, and toilet habits.
4.
Read to children, and teach them simple painting, drawing, crafts, and songs.
5.
Monitor and interact with the children during outdoor activities to enhance their learning.
6.
Prepare and serve meals/snacks and monitor children during lunch/snack time.
7.
Maintain the order, safety, and cleanliness of the facility and grounds; follow a cleating routine that keeps all of the interactive areas sanitary and safe.
8.
Provide children/youth with positive reinforcement as appropriate.
9.
Implement behavioral modification techniques as instructed.
10.
Report on suspected child abuse/neglect as mandated by law.
11.
Maintain complete and accurate daily records.
12.
Work with supervisors to maintain communication with parents and contact parents in emergency situations.
13.
Attend staff meetings and/or training as required.
14.
Comply with safety and health rules and regulations.
15.
Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Education and Experience:
Must possess a high school diploma or GED, or currently be a student (must have completed 9th grade); one (1) year youth programming experience in a paid or volunteer capacity is required. Experience in athletics and physical games and activities of all types is preferred. A comparable amount of training, education or experience can be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

Certifications and Licenses:
CPR and First Aid certification and 40 hours Department of Children and Families certification required within six months in position.

Performance Aptitudes:

Ability to provide compassionate and empathetic care to children/youth of all ages required.

Must be proficient in math, reading and English.
•
Ability to create and implement age-appropriate activities for children/youth.
•
Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving the evaluation of information.

Requires the ability to apply principles of persuasion and/or influence over others in coordinating activities of a project, program or designated area of responsibility.
•
Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, and/or advisory data and information.
•
Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; the ability to calculate decimals and percentages.

Requires the ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form.
Essential Physical Skills:
Tasks require the ability to exert moderate, though not constant physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate to heavy weight (25-50 pounds). Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally. Work Environment:
Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature, and noise extremes, and/or toxic/poisonous agents, depending on the area of assignment.
